Aspiring scientist Arabella Holmes doesn't fit the role of a 1900s lady. Her father, Sherlock, landed her a position at the Mütter Museum to pursue her dream of becoming a purveyor of abnormal science, or what her father calls a "boneseeker."

Henry Watson's two-fold mission at the Mütter Museum is to join their team of forensic anthropologists in unearthing unusual antiquities and to watch over Arabella. If only he could get her to speak to him, instead of hurling knives in his general direction. Assigned to a most secret expedition to investigate a mysterious skeletal hand discovered in upstate New York, Arabella and Henry are soon caught in a scientific debate, and the search for the truth may have deadly consequences for those involved.

Are the bones from a Neanderthal? Or are they living proof of fallen angels known as Nephilim?

Watson and Holmes must put aside their differences, trust their instincts, and rely on one another to survive to uncover the truth.

Boneseeker The Boneseeker Chronicles Book 1 Audible Audio Edition Brynn Chapman Karen Krause The Wild Rose Press Books Reviews

  • Just the cover alone makes you want to read this book, but once inside the covers, you will find much to like in this delightful story. It stars two people who never existed but should have – Holmes and Watson. But not *that* Holmes and not *that* Watson; this is the next generation.
Arabella Holmes has all the family characteristics. She’s insightful, logical, and fearless, but – like Sherlock – set apart from other people. She’s a loner, uncomfortable with fancy dress and small-talk. She doesn’t even dance and would rather be in her laboratory, researching things that would be of no interest to you and me, instead of a society ball.
Henry Watson is handsome, well-traveled, and notorious with the women, but from childhood, he’s always had a special place in his heart for “Bella.” Fate has torn them apart but now it brings them together in a sweet romance that was clearly meant to be.
Doctor John Watson also has a significant role to play in Boneseeker. He and his son make a good team for dealing with the bad guys, especially in the white-knuckle ending, where Bella’s entire future is at risk, as well as…ah, other things.
If you’re expecting to find bones in this story, you will not be disappointed – though most of them are for research purposes.
As with the author’s other books, this one is based in part on things that are actually true. Some of them may surprise you.
Bottom line Read this book. You’ll be glad you did.
  • This was so poorly edited that I had a hard time finishing this one. There was even an instance of Dr. Watson and Henry being addressed as Dr. and Mr. Holmes. If you have a preposition like between, then you must use me not I. I thought the premise sounded truly interesting, and I broke my rule of buying a book for full price. Granted it was only $3.99 on , but I still feel that the book should have been edited a little better for that purchase price.
  • If you enjoy a historical mystery romance, particularly if you are a fan of the BBC's hit series Sherlock, you will enjoy this book. Just the right amount of humor, mystery and romance.
  • Not for me. I tried to read this several times. I just kept getting sidelined. I love the cover, and will put this in a tbr again later stack. After two weeks and more attempts to read this than I care to recall I am giving up for now.
  • Boneseeker by Brynn Chapman is the first book I have read by this author. I enjoyed it immensely. I love Sherlock Holmes and his books. This spin of what would happen if Sherlock and John had kids that fell in love with each other is ingenious. This book follow Arabella Holmes and Henry Watson in solving their first case together.

    Arabella Holmes
Arabella Holmes is the daughter of Sherlock Holmes and some unknown lady. She is a female version of Sherlock.

Arabella is similar to Dr. Temperance Brennan aka Bones, if you watched the show or read those books. So think of a cross between Bones and Sherlock, set in the early 1900s. I think this is a really cool combination. Arabella is an amazing character and I can see Sherlock being proud of as a daughter.

I like that she is the first female to work in science. The only thing I thought hurt her was her independence and stubborn streak. She should have woke Henry when….oopps, you will have to read the book.

    Henry Watson
We can’t have a Holmes without a Watson. Henry is John and Mary Watson’s youngest child. However, Henry is not like Special Agent Seely Booth, he is more like Dr. Hodgins in my mind’s eye.

Henry stabilizes Arabella, much like his father did with Sherlock. He helps her be a good person and try to be a functioning human.

What I like about Henry is that he never gives up on Arabella. Another thing I like is that he took the professional track that he wanted instead of following in John’s footsteps, even though John would have preferred that he was a medical doctor. I didn’t like that he didn’t always go after Arabella. Also, that he didn’t stand up to his father regarding Priscilla.

    Five Stars
I am giving Boneseeker by Brynn Chapman a five-star rating because it was entertaining. Also, I am in love with Holmes and Watson the next generation. I highly recommend this book to fans of Sherlock and Bones.

  • Bonseeker was a surprisingly delightful romp through turn-of-the-century Philidelphia. Our guides on this most excellent of sinister adventures was none other than the children of Sherlock Holmes and John Watson, Arabella and Henry. Both principle characters lead the narrative with equal energy and tenacity despite their circumstances. While romance was a very alluring element to this story, it doesn't overshadow so much as enhance this proposed sequel to Conan-Doyle's prolific works.
Chapman has clearly done her research, not only into the science and views of the time, but dares to take a deeper look into the psychology behind beloved and new characters. Fantastic world building and characterization, coupled with strong storytelling chops from Chapman provide an excellent read.
Bonseeker is so layered and complex but very accessible to old and new fans of historical fiction. An absolute must-read for fans of strong corset-wearing heroines and the requisite danger of the best Holmes mystery.
